Blurb:

Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only are she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

My Thoughts

When I saw this book revolved around Norse mythology I knew I had to get my hands on it since I love mythology.

The story had an interesting premise, the writing style was good and I was mostly glued to it, except on those occasions when there were character name misspellings and I had to do a double take (Cora being called Cara).

“'Everyone has parents, silly,' Cara said and pushed Eirik’s head." (P.40, Kindle edition)

That disrupted the flow of my reading a little. The pace was good and there’s some air of mystery while trying to figure out if Torin was a god or something else.

Although I didn’t like the first glimpse of Torin’s personality we got, I do like his physical attributes since dark haired men with blue eyes are one of my weaknesses. *Swoon*

Some readers seemed bothered by the ending. I was not. I was actually expecting it since it had happened before throughout the book. We had more than enough warning that something like that might happen. So yeah, I wasn’t bothered. What really bothered me was this whole love triangle issue.

I really hate love triangles. I really do. But the type of love triangle I hate the most is when a character is already in a relationship and goes around panting after some other guy/girl. I can’t stand it and this happened in Runes. I wish she would have dumped, or not even started anything with , one guy if she had doubts. And she certainly had them. And then, what happened with Eirik at the pool scene towards end, was just a little bit too convenient for my taste.

I did enjoy the book and I am curious about what will happen next, so I will be reading the next book.

My rating for this book is 3.5 out of 5 stars.
